This presentation will explore the regulatory landscape for food policy in Australia and, to a limited extent, New Zealand. It will begin by looking at the broader landscape in which Australia is currently updating its Dietary Guidelines and undertaking the first population nutrition survey since 2011. One in which bi-partisan support has been given for strategies to make a difference - the National Obesity Strategy and the National Prevention Strategy. A closer look will be taken into the limited funding and implementation of these strategies, as well as challenges facing a number of key initiatives led by the Federal government and Food Standards Australia New Zealand. Examples will be drawn from current reforms under discussion including reforms to the overarching food regulatory system; labelling - including the Health Star Rating; improving composition and promotion of foods for babies and toddlers; regulation to protect children from unhealthy food marketing; as well as a health levy on sugary drinks.
